Motion Raceworks Rocky Mountain Race Week Daily Coverage: Day One Action From Thunder Valley

Motion Raceworks Rocky Mountain Race Week Daily Coverage: Day One Action From Thunder Valley

Rocky Mountain Race Week is in the books, and we were traveling the route with all these folks so we could bring you the FREE livestream that we had going all week long. It was a week full of fun, adventures, carnage, and more, but even if you were there you wouldn’t have been able to see it all. There is that much going on! But thanks to the folks at Motion Raceworks we’ve got more cool video coverage from the entire week and we’re going to share it all with you one day at a time. They were on-site with their parts merch trailer and were helping people out with great stuff all week long. This is the first video from Day One at Thunder Valley in Noble Oklahoma, which means everyone is racing and there is no on road carnage or anything yet. This is the day where everyone thinks everything is great and that they can win this whole thing. Spirits are high. At least until the racing gets going.

Why? Because some of these poor folks are going to tear their stuff up before they ever get to leave the first track. The good news is that they have all night to work on them because we don’t leave for the next track until the next morning, and the drive isn’t horrible from Thunder Valley to the Texas Motorplex in Ennis. Plus, there is the World’s Largest Summit Racing Equipment store on the way and it’s full of great parts to fix most anything.

Between Summit and the Motion Raceworks trailer full of parts, there was no shortage of new stuff going on hot rods Sunday night.

Here is the video description:

Scary Flamin’ Video: Watch This Mustang Grudge Car Smash The Wall And Erupt Into Flames (Driver Walks Away)

Scary Flamin’ Video: Watch This Mustang Grudge Car Smash The Wall And Erupt Into Flames (Driver Walks Away)

There’s nothing scarier than fire in a race car. Nothing. That’s something being said by an announcer, not even a person who has to be front and center when their whole world looks like the inside of the freaking sun. Of course I’m saying that because of how this video plays out. Shot at the recent Carolina No/Time event at GALOT Motorsports Park in North Carolina, we’re going to see a magnificent looking Fox style Mustang that packs a massive nitrous engine hammer the wall with incredible force and then erupt into flames and look like Ghost Rider’s taxi.

The good news here is that the driver opens the door and climbs out himself. You can tell that the dude is banged up though as he nearly drops to his knees the moment he escapes the flaming hell he was sitting in. So what happened here?

Drag racing happened. This is not a no-prep event, it is a no-time event. So don’t go flapping your gums about the dangers of no prep racing. This was a deal where the guy likely had some decent money on the line and knew that if he was going to beat his opponent he was going to need to bring the power in plenty early and really lean on it. Well, the power came in but the traction went away. It seems like the dude may have stood in on the gas again as the car was crossing the track because the impact to the front corner on the driver’s side is brutally harsh.

That impact breaks the fuel cell which causes the flaming trail of fuel and kicks off the initial inferno. We’re guessing the electric fuel pump keeps the party going for a minute before the safety crew starts hosing the car down with fire suppressant. We hope that the driver makes a full recovery and we hope that the car is repaired. That thing was seriously freaking beautiful.

NHRA Photos: More Nitro Funny Cars From The NHRA Winternationals In July, At Pomona

NHRA Photos: More Nitro Funny Cars From The NHRA Winternationals In July, At Pomona

(Photos by Wes Allison) It’s our second gallery of NHRA Nitro Funny Car photos, so check them all out right here! And if you missed any of our other galleries, click the link at the bottom to see them all. Nitro is a riot to watch at night, and especially when it lights up the sides of a nitro burning Funny Car like the ones pictured in our gallery below. The NHRA Winternationals may have been happening in July in 2021, but that doesn’t mean the race in Pomona didn’t mean as much to the competitors as it does when it is the season opener. This is an event in the backyard of NHRA’s headquarters and the home of hot rodding in general. This is a special race in a special place and everyone brings their A-game when racing in Pomona.

With all kinds of events being canceled in 2020, and with California leading the charge on restrictions for events, it is no shock that the 2021 NHRA Winternationals in Pomona didn’t happen as scheduled either. But NHRA knew it was going to happen this way because of their close relationship with the LA County Fairgrounds where the famed dragstrip is located so they were able to pivot and make things happen for a Winternationals that would instead happen in the summer. Wait, what? The Winter Summer Nationals? Well, yeah.

I give NHRA big credit for making this thing happen, even if what to call it has become a funny issue. But we’re still going to call them the Winternationals, the event that is SUPPOSED to start off the season in Pomona, because that is what they are even if they get postponed. Lucky for us we have a great group of photographers who have been shooting for us the past week, and this weekend is Wes Allison shooting all the Pro and Sportsman action he can get his camera pointed at.

B. Torrence, Capps, Anderson & Krawiec Lead Qualifying For NHRA Finals At Vegas!

(Photos by Mike & Jeff Burghardt and Timothy Heather – Words courtesy of NHRA Communications) – Billy and Steve Torrence powered to the top two spots in Top Fuel on Saturday during qualifying at the 20th annual Dodge NHRA Finals presented by Pennzoil at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, bringing S. Torrence a step closer to his third straight world championship.

Ron Capps (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also No. 1 qualifiers at the Dodge NHRA Finals presented by Pennzoil, which is the final race of the 2020 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.

Torrence went 3.728-seconds at 325.30 mph in his 11,000-horsepower Capco Contractors dragster, with his son, Steve, a step behind at 3.731 at 330.39. It is B. Torrence’s third career No. 1 qualifier and first this season. Should S. Torrence win his first-round matchup on Sunday against Kebin Kinsley, he will claim a Top Fuel world title for the third consecutive year. He clinched his first world title at Las Vegas two years ago and now has an opportunity to do it again in 2020 to keep his incredible run going.

“I saw my old man keep on rolling down through there, so I knew it was on a good run, but we’ll just go out and do what we need to do tomorrow,” S. Torrence said. “We need to go rounds. We don’t need to worry about what the points are and who we have. We just need to go rounds tomorrow.”

Doug Kalitta qualified third with a run of 3.746 at 327.74. To claim his first world championship, he’ll need to win the race and have S. Torrence lose in the opening round.

In Funny Car, Ron Capps picked up his first No. 1 qualifier of 2020 and 25th in his career, powering to the top spot with a run of 3.902 at 327.98 in his 11,000-horsepower NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. He will take on rookie Chris Morel (above) in the first round of eliminations as Don Schumacher Racing seeks its 14th straight victory in the class and a sweep of the 2020 season.

His strong run bumped teammate Matt Hagan to the second spot, as the points leader looks to claim his third career world title. Hagan ran 3.911 at 327.82 and he’ll meet Cruz Pedregon to start raceday. He leads DSR teammates Tommy Johnson Jr. and Jack Beckman by 45 and 52 points, respectively, heading into eliminations. Johnson qualified fourth with a 3.915 at 319.14 and Beckman starts raceday from the 10th position. With the race being a points-and-a-half scenario, a round win is worth 30 points, meaning Johnson or Beckman would have to finish two rounds ahead of Hagan to win a title.

The Summit Racing Equipment/KB Racing Pro Stock team of Greg Anderson and Jason Line impressed during qualifying on Saturday, with Anderson taking the top spot and Line, who has championship aspirations in the final race of his Pro Stock career, following in second. Anderson went 6.601 at 206.73 in his Chevrolet Camaro to claim his second No. 1 qualifier this season and 106th in his standout career. He’s also an eight-time Vegas winner and opens eliminations against Aaron Strong.

Line, meanwhile, will head into race day second after going 6.635 at 206.39. That brings him to within 47 points of leader and defending world champ Erica Enders heading into eliminations. Enders struggled on Saturday and qualified 12th, and will take on Elite Motorsports teammate Alex Laughlin in the first round as she seeks back-to-back world titles. The third championship contender, Jeg Coughlin Jr., qualified ninth and is 55 points behind Enders heading into Sunday, which is also his final race in his storied Pro Stock career.

Following his win last weekend, Eddie Krawiec continues to stay hot in Pro Stock Motorcycle, vaulting to the No. 1 spot with a track record run of 6.818 at 198.12 on his Harley-Davidson FXDR. It is Krawiec’s second No. 1 qualifier — his first came at the opening race of the season — and the 48th in his career. The victory last weekend in Houston kept him in championship contention and he’ll open eliminations against Cory Reed, trailing leader Matt Smith by 80 points.

Smith (above) qualified second with a 6.821 at 198.38 and he’ll take on Krawiec’s teammate, three-time champion Angelle Sampey, in the first round. Joey Gladstone qualified third with a 6.893 at 195.56. Scotty Pollacheck, who is 86 points behind teammate Smith, remains in contention as well after taking the fourth spot with a run of 6.900 at 196.04.

In the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service, Khalid alBalooshi qualified No. 1 for the third time in 2020, going 5.755 at 248.34 in his ProCharger-powered Bahrain 1 Racing Camaro. Points leader Brandon Snider took the second spot at the race, which is presented by Strutmasters.com, with a run of 5.766 at 248.71. He’ll open eliminations against Brandon Pesz and started the weekend with a 26-point lead over defending world champion Stevie “Fast” Jackson, who qualified fifth. Should both Snider and Jackson win their first-round matchups, they would meet in the second round with the winner getting a bye to the final round.

Eliminations for the Dodge NHRA Finals presented by Pennzoil begin at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday. Live television coverage, with host Brian Lohnes, starts at 4 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 (FS1).

Next Level: MAHLE Motorsport Promotes Custom Piston Program for Gasoline and Diesel Engine Applications

There’s just something about getting custom made parts that’s really cool, right? There’s also just something about getting the perfect pistons for your engine build that’s really cool as well. MAHLE Motorsport, as they are want to do, has changed the game on the custom piston side of things with this new program for gasoline and diesel engines.

Why? You get to pick the alloy, the coatings, there’s a step by step approval process, and the list goes on and on. Other than standing there and looking over the machinist’s shoulder when the pistons are made, you’ll be insanely involved in the process.

Her’s the full story from MAHLE Motorsport. This is cool.

MAHLE Motorsport Promotes Custom Piston Program for Gasoline and Diesel Engine Applications

Fletcher, NC  – MAHLE Motorsport, well known for their popular shelf stock PowerPak and PowerPak Plus piston assemblies, announces availability of a custom piston program for engine builders and professional race teams. Custom pistons for street, off-road or race applications can be developed at the company’s manufacturing facility in Fletcher, NC for both gasoline and diesel engines.

The custom piston program provides a choice of alloy options: 2618, 4032, M124 and M142P, or billet and numerous coatings with special protective properties including GRAFAL, Phosphate and Thermal Barrier Coating. GRAFAL®, only available through MAHLE Motorsport, provides a unique cushioning property to absorb harsh contact between the piston skirt and the cylinder bore.  Phosphate dry lubricant coating provides a layer of film in the pin bores and ring grooves for additional sealing until the oiling system of the engine reaches full operating temperature. MAHLE’s Thermal Barrier Coating is a ceramic coating applied to the piston crown that is durable and resistant to thermal shock. This new coating insulates the crown and reduces heat transfer to increase performance. Various high performance file fit ring options are also available specific to each piston’s application.

MAHLE Motorsport’s custom piston program allows customers to work one-on-one with the design engineering team for a truly custom-design experience. The process includes first filling out a Data Sheet which will be used to create the initial CAD drawing. At every step in the design process, there is an approval process until details are finalized for manufacturing. All pistons are manufactured in MAHLE’s race centered Motorsport division and held to the highest standards in the industry with the support of technological advancements MAHLE has developed over the last 100 years.

For more information about MAHLE Motorsport’s custom piston program visit www.mahlemotorsports.com, or call MAHLE Motorsport toll free at 888-255-1942.  To download the 2020 application guide click here. The Greek’s Great Weekend: Watch Chris Karamesines Make His First Career NHRA Final Round In Montreal Circa 1990

The Greek’s Great Weekend: Watch Chris Karamesines Make His First Career NHRA Final Round In Montreal Circa 1990

It was a magical thing to watch. The oldest top fuel finalist in NHRA history at 61 years of age, Chris Karamesines “The Golden Greek” the man, the myth, and the legend, was finally standing on the verge of winning an NHRA National event. The event in question was Le GrandNational Molson, which was the NHRA event held each year at the Sanair Super Speedway for decades. A day of awesome competition had seen the Greek outrun Lori Johns, beat Joe Amato, and finally find himself in the final against Gary Ormsby who had won the 1989 NHRA top fuel championship.

Karamesines was a long way from the halcyon days of 1960 at Alton, Illinois where he and crew chief Don Maynard supposedly made drag racing’s first 200mph run. It was that run that started a career that still maintains today as Karamesines can be found racing top fuel dragsters in 2020, albeit not with the success he had in 1990.

This is the first of two Christ Karamesines Time Machines I made and it’s a really fun watch. The dude it awesome and he is still awesome today. Quick with a smile, soft spoken but never one to be messed with, this 90-ish year old guy is a national treasure and he was one at the age 0f 61 as well.

Enjoy!
