Hagerty Redline Rebuild Video: The 1974 Honda CT70 Is DONE – Watch The Awesome Payoff Video Here

We’ve been waiting for a while to see this one. The latest project in the Hagerty Redline Rebuild series has been a 1974 Honda CT70 mini-bike. These things have a cult following and command top dollar on the internet, even for forlorn junk. The idea of seeing one taken all the way down to its bare essentials and then re constructed like a brand new one is the coolest part.

As you’ll watch, every single piece of this machine was checked, disassembled, R&R’d or replaced during this build. No stone was left unturned, no part left made anything less than perfect.

We’d ramble on but we don’t need to. You know the drill. Redline Rebuild rules!

Press play below to see this Honda CT70 Redline Rebuild video – Totally awesome!

Badges? We NEED Those Stinkin’ Badges! History Of The Most Familiar Logos In The Automotive World

The blue oval, the bow tie, the pentastar, the tri-shield. Just by naming these generic shapes, virtually every person reading this can identify what brands they are associated with. There are few industries or products in the world that have that sort of strong recognition, but where did those logos come from? We got curious on the same topic so we started to poke around to get the answers. All of them have evolved over the years and while all the badges we’ll talk about have many of the same cues as the originals, none of them are exactly the same. That’s the nature of design we guess. Nothing stays the same forever. We’re not going to go through every car company, but we are going to go through a lot of them that you know about. From wall paper to family history, all of these logos are rooted in an interesting human story.

bowtieThe Chevrolet Bow tie – This is one that has no true definitive answer. What is known is that Billy Durant was responsible for the logo, where he got his inspiration is the question. A commonly held story is that Durant saw the design on the wallpaper of a French hotel in 1908. The design stuck with him and it was then used on Chevrolet cars in 1913. There are other claims that he saw a business using a similar logo in a newspaper at about the same time and adopted it for Chevrolet. Other theories include a connection to the Swiss flag as Louis Chevrolet was born there and the Swiss flag has a cross on it. Perhaps the bow tie was a stylized tribute to that? No matter the origin, the logo has gone on to be one of the world’s most well known and enduring automotive icons.

blue ovalThe Ford Blue Oval – Classic script inside of a blue oval has identified Ford cars for many, many years but it isn’t the only logo the company has used. Believe it or not, the first Ford oval logo appears in 1912. It was not blue but rather a simple oval outline around the Ford script. One thing that has been constant since 1912 has been that script. The font has not changed a lick since it was first debuted. In 1928 the familiar blue was added to the oval and other than some shaping changes it was placed on every Ford car up until the 1970s when the logo was stopped for a period. It showed back up again in the 1980s and continues today. In 2003 an updated version called the “centennial oval” was introduced. Again, it wasn’t much more than a streamlining job on the design introduced in 1928.

buick

The Buick Tri-Shield – Here’s one that has morphed and changed as the years have gone on buy still today, all Buicks wear a variant of it. Buick didn’t really have much of a logo until the 1930s. Up to that point, the cars all had Buick written on them in script font. As the story goes, a stylist was tasked with coming up with a logo so the man went into research mode and looked up the Buick family’s coat of arms in Scotland (where they were from). He discovered that the design was a deer head in the upper corner and a gold cross in the lower corner, separated by a diagonal sash through the center. From 1937 to 1959 all Buick cars were delivered with a single shield badge on them. In 1960 the company went to the Tri-shield to represent the three cars it was selling at the time which were the LeSabre, Invicta, and Electra. Since then there have been variations of the Tri-shield on every Buick sold here and where they are most popular, in China. The shields no longer carry the designs in them but they make up the center of the badge.

pentastarThe Chrysler Pentastar – This is the new kid of the bunch so far, having been developed in the early 1960s as a way for Chrysler to have its own larger corporate identity rather than the scatter of its brands. Robert Stanley was the man who drew the original Pentastar and the “five triangle” design. Each piece represented a division of Chrysler. Imperial, Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler, and Dodge trucks were what each chunk represented. Debuted on 1963 models, with small versions of the logo being installed behind the right front wheel on all Chrysler vehicles. The Pentastar had a good run that stopped when Daimler showed up and nixed it. When the Daimler disaster ended, the Pentastar came back in 2007 with a more stylized, steely, and 3D looking version.

With Fiat’s acquisition of Chrysler, the Pentastar may be living on borrowed time again. We recently saw a proposed logo for the new “Fiat-Chrysler Automobile Company” and it predictably looked like crap. We hope this symbol sticks around, but don’t count on it.

cadillacThe Cadillac Crest – Few corporate emblems have both morphed and endured as long as that of Cadillac. Over the course of the last 112 years, the Cadillac logo has been changed, spiffed up, or otherwise altered nearly 40 times. The one constant in the whole thing is the family crest of Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the guy who founded Detroit in 1701. His family crest has served as the anchor for a badge that has had a laurel wreath around it, a V supporting it, a circle around it, and the crest itself has been used in various sizes. Cadillac has changed it once again recently and the laurel wreath is being dropped because stylists feel that it is old and dated. The crest itself is being widened and stretched some and will be prominently displayed on the full range of cars starting with the 2014 model year. Outside of the size and style changes, the badge has ridden on a cars that swung wildly in their popularity and quality. From the “standard of the world” era of the ‘teens and 1920s to the Cimarron which is still regarded as the worst model the brand ever attached its name to. Happily, today’s Cadillacs are world class cars that stand in with competition from all over the globe and attract a younger demographic than ever before.

Picture 9

The Four Rings Of Audi – This is one of the most interesting logos that exists in the automotive world. It originated in 1932 when four German car companies merged together to form an operation that roughly translates in English to “Auto Union”. The four companies that merged together were Horch, DKW, Audi, and Wanderer. The rings each represent one of the companies. Over the years the rings have changed slightly to keep with the style of the varying eras they have lived through but no major alterations have ever been made. It is a design that will look contemporary until the end of time if you ask us.

mack

The Mack Truck Bulldog – Sometimes a nickname just sticks. During the throes of WWI, the British government needed tough, versatile trucks for their soldiers to use in the field. They orders a fleet of Mack AC models and soldiers were so impressed with their toughness that they started called them “Bulldog Macks”. The blunt nosed trucks did everything they were asked to do and more, helping the war effort a bunch. Despite the popularity of the nickname, which made it back to US shores, the company’s trademark logo wouldn’t land on the nose of a big truck until 1932 and even that is a pretty cool story.

Mack’s Chief Engineer Alfred Fellows Masury was recovering in the hospital from an operation and to amuse himself he carved a bulldog out of soap. He and his visitors loved it. After leaving the hospital he carved one in wood and soon it was trademarked and every mack that has rolled out the door since ’32 has had one of Masury’s carvings on the hood. When the company was still independent and manufacturing all of its major components, you could tell a pure Mack truck because the bulldog was golden. If the bulldog was chrome, it meant the buyer spec’d a non-Mack engine, transmission, etc.

bmw

The BMW Roundel – When we talk about logos that have been unchanged for a long time, consider that the BMW logo was trademarked in 1917 and other than very subtle generational changes, it is exactly the same. The funny thing about this one is the fact that lots of people believe that the center of the logo it supposed to represent a spinning airplane prop. This is wrong. Blue and white are the colors on the Bavarian flag and BMW stands for Bavarian Motor Works.

The confusion on the airplane prop deal seems to stem from an advertisement from the 1920s that showed the logo in such proximity to a plane that people drew a connection. Also, BMW basically sprung from the Rapp company, which was an airplane engine manufacturer in the early half of the 20th century.

lamboThe Lamborghini Bull – It feels like there should be lots of mystery, intrigue and cool stuff happening with this particular logo. After all, the company began life as a tractor manufacturer before major domo Ferruccio Lamborghini decided that he wanted to go into the sports car business and take on the likes of Ferrari and others. So, what’s the big deal about the fighting bull that has resided on the company’s logo since it started building cars? Not much, actually. Lamborghini’s zodiac sign was Taurus, so a stylized bull was put on the badge.

Subsequently, models have been named after famous fighting bulls, but the story behind the badge that every Lambo has ever worn is one of the more mundane of the bunch, especially considering the fact that the company makes some of the most dramatic and controversial super cars in the world.

Scary Flamin’ Video: Watch This Mustang Grudge Car Smash The Wall And Erupt Into Flames (Driver Walks Away)

Scary Flamin’ Video: Watch This Mustang Grudge Car Smash The Wall And Erupt Into Flames (Driver Walks Away)

There’s nothing scarier than fire in a race car. Nothing. That’s something being said by an announcer, not even a person who has to be front and center when their whole world looks like the inside of the freaking sun. Of course I’m saying that because of how this video plays out. Shot at the recent Carolina No/Time event at GALOT Motorsports Park in North Carolina, we’re going to see a magnificent looking Fox style Mustang that packs a massive nitrous engine hammer the wall with incredible force and then erupt into flames and look like Ghost Rider’s taxi.

The good news here is that the driver opens the door and climbs out himself. You can tell that the dude is banged up though as he nearly drops to his knees the moment he escapes the flaming hell he was sitting in. So what happened here?

Drag racing happened. This is not a no-prep event, it is a no-time event. So don’t go flapping your gums about the dangers of no prep racing. This was a deal where the guy likely had some decent money on the line and knew that if he was going to beat his opponent he was going to need to bring the power in plenty early and really lean on it. Well, the power came in but the traction went away. It seems like the dude may have stood in on the gas again as the car was crossing the track because the impact to the front corner on the driver’s side is brutally harsh.

That impact breaks the fuel cell which causes the flaming trail of fuel and kicks off the initial inferno. We’re guessing the electric fuel pump keeps the party going for a minute before the safety crew starts hosing the car down with fire suppressant. We hope that the driver makes a full recovery and we hope that the car is repaired. That thing was seriously freaking beautiful.

Stellantis’s EV Day: Life At Chrysler, Plug-In Jeeps, An EV Ram, And What The Hell Is That Dodge?!

There was a whisper of something coming from Stellantis regarding EV cars a couple of days ago. But there was no way that anybody was prepared for the full-on battery of news that the company released today that spelled out the future of not just the North American brands, but every brand under the Stellantis fold. It’s not too surprising that EV powertrains are the focus…Stellantis, and previously FCA, have been viewed as lacking in electric vehicle innovation and like it or hate it, that is a part of the company that is necessary for business in today’s automotive climate. We’ll run you through the quick notes on the brands overall, but obviously we want to tackle the four main brands that we feel BangShift readers want to know the most about. The very short version goes like this: There will be four main platforms coming out soon (“soon” meaning about 2024, provided no more global plague, chip shortage, zombie apocalypse, what have you) and they will flow like this:

  • STLA Small, with up to 300 miles of range
  • STLA Medium, with up to 440 miles of range
  • STLA Large, with up to 500 miles of range
  • STLA Frame, with up to 500 miles of range

And this impacts every brand under the Stellantis fold. And just in case you didn’t know or weren’t aware, here’s the full list of brands and the associated taglines they are using for this EV push. Don’t shoot the messanger, we didn’t write these.

  • Abarth – “Heating Up People, But Not The Planet.”
  • Alfa Romeo – “From 2024, Alfa Becomes e-Romeo”
  • Chrysler – “Clean Technology For A New Generation Of Families”
  • Citröen – “Citröen Electric: Well-Being For All”
  • Dodge – “Tear Up The Streets, Not The Planet”
  • DS Automobiles – “The Art Of Travel, Magnified”
  • Fiat – “It’s Only Green When Green Is For All”
  • Jeep – “Zero Emissions Freedom”
  • Lancia – “The Most Elegant Way To Protect The Planet”
  • Maserati – “The Best In Performance Luxury, Electrified”
  • Opel/Vauxhall – “Green Is The New Cool”
  • Peugeot – “Turning Sustainable Mobility Into Quality Time”
  • Ram – “Built To Serve A Sustainable Planet”
  • Commercial Vehicles – “The Global Leader In e-Commercial Vehicles”

So, what are the new products that are coming? We’ll get to Chrysler, Jeep, Ram and Dodge in a minute, but here’s the cliff notes for the rest: Peugeot is taking the lead with their already decent-selling EV line. Fiat is going full EV, though there is no word on if that will continue to sell in the North American market. Lancia, a company many thought was on death row with a guaranteed date, is supposed to be whipping up at least three new vehicles. Opel/Vauxhall is projecting to have a crossover SUV tenatively named “Manta” and intends to be fully-electric by 2028. But we know what you came here for, so let’s get straight to it.

Chrysler

Not much was spoken in the way of Chrysler. But in the full Stellantis EV Day video (at the bottom of this story), during Ralph Gilles’ segment, you will see this concept that is plainly badged as a Chrysler. It comes off like a street-friendly AWD crossover, but the big story here is that something is happening at Chrysler that doesn’t involve further de-contenting the 300 sedan. It’s that one blip of heartbeat on an otherwise dead heart monitor. Now, let’s see if something comes from this. Stellantis promised that every brand had some time to prove their value before they were pruned off. Chrysler was vying with Lancia at the bottom of the pile for years. Let’s see if they can claw their way back into the market.

Jeep

Ram

Dodge

Jeep and Ram speak for themselves. But pour over the Dodge video carefully, because there are some surprising notes in here. Namely three items:

Item 1: A roofline that could either be Charger or Challenger (or, potentially, a new-named vehicle).

Item 2: The return of the “Fratzog”, the tri-point emblem that graced Dodge products from 1962-1975. Those hood creases have an interesting shape to them as well…

Item 3: As you can see in both the lead image and the video below, a car with a very 1968 Charger-esque front light design and the Fratzog symbol waking up all four tires with extreme violence, after Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis showed off tons of tire-torching muscle (and the car world’s version of a hiked-up skirt with that slight pullback of the covered car). Out of all of the announcements of Stellantis’s EV Day, Dodge has our full attention. Not for the battery car, not for the planet. EVs have proven to be daily-useable. They’ve proven to be blindingly fast…ask the dude in the stripped Tesla Model S who hustles Hellcats what that life is all about. What they don’t have is a soul. If Dodge can give an EV a soul, and provide that X-factor that no other EV really has for a gearhead, they win. Hands down.

Awesomely Weird: This 1970s Chevrolet Parts Film Stars Evel Knievel And Literally Makes No Sense

Awesomely Weird: This 1970s Chevrolet Parts Film Stars Evel Knievel And Literally Makes No Sense

We’re guessing someone lost their job for this one. You are going to watch this 1970s Chevrolet parts film which stars Evel Knivel and makes literally no sense at all. The theme of the film is “conflict” and it is illustrated by a series of scenes where animals eat other animals, black and white movies are shown, and Evel Knievel jumps stuff on his motorcycle, sometimes crashing, sometimes not. Throw in a dose of 1970s Anchoman-level hilarity with a bikini-clad woman, and you have yourself one of the most singular odd things we have ever seen.

Make no mistake, Knievel would never turn down a gig, especially one with Chevrolet that likely was a great payday for reading some cue-cards. The company definitely did not hire him for his suave acting ability because this dude is straight up stiff while narrating the action. By action, we mean the bizarre things we are shown on screen.

Oddly, while Chevrolet parts are mentioned a handful of times there’s barely (if ever) a Chevrolet car shown as a prop in the film. This whole thing is some weirdo theater of the mind that was likely schemed up by an executive’s kid. “Hey Johnson, get my son a job in the media department and let him run wild!”

Obviously, Knievel was majorly famous at this point and his star only grew bigger. Note that he mentions that someday, “I’ll jump a mile….” we all know how that quest ended.

You have to see this one to believe it.

Press play to see the weirdest Chevrolet Parts video ever made, starring Evel Knievel!

Drag Week 2020 Is Cancelled: But Will Something Else Pop? Stay Tuned Racers!

Drag Week 2020 Is Cancelled: But Will Something Else Pop? Stay Tuned Racers!

Yep, the sad news that Drag Week 2020 was cancelled happened a few days ago, and it makes us sad but is not surprising. With one of the tracks closing for the year weeks ago, and at least one other track wanting to get out of holding the event, there wasn’t much hope on our end that this thing was actually going to happen. But thinking it would be cancelled and it actually getting cancelled are two different things and so it sucks for everyone that counts on this event each and every year. In this video you’ll see Alex and Dennis Taylor talking about the event, the cancellation, and hinting at something else that is maybe possibly kinda in the works. Trust me, that isn’t a click bait routing any more than the video title is. There is something in the works to try and salvage the time off and everything else for Drag Week Racers. So don’t cancel the vacation plans yet. The route won’t be the same, but the time frame would be, so keep those dates open!

I wish we could give you all the details and info right now, but things are still in the works and still not confirmed. But know that there is a promoter out there working to make this a reality for everyone.

Until we have 100% confirmation we won’t say anything more. But rest assured that when it is 100% we will tell the world.

Next Level: MAHLE Motorsport Promotes Custom Piston Program for Gasoline and Diesel Engine Applications

There’s just something about getting custom made parts that’s really cool, right? There’s also just something about getting the perfect pistons for your engine build that’s really cool as well. MAHLE Motorsport, as they are want to do, has changed the game on the custom piston side of things with this new program for gasoline and diesel engines.

Why? You get to pick the alloy, the coatings, there’s a step by step approval process, and the list goes on and on. Other than standing there and looking over the machinist’s shoulder when the pistons are made, you’ll be insanely involved in the process.

Her’s the full story from MAHLE Motorsport. This is cool.

MAHLE Motorsport Promotes Custom Piston Program for Gasoline and Diesel Engine Applications

Fletcher, NC  – MAHLE Motorsport, well known for their popular shelf stock PowerPak and PowerPak Plus piston assemblies, announces availability of a custom piston program for engine builders and professional race teams. Custom pistons for street, off-road or race applications can be developed at the company’s manufacturing facility in Fletcher, NC for both gasoline and diesel engines.

The custom piston program provides a choice of alloy options: 2618, 4032, M124 and M142P, or billet and numerous coatings with special protective properties including GRAFAL, Phosphate and Thermal Barrier Coating. GRAFAL®, only available through MAHLE Motorsport, provides a unique cushioning property to absorb harsh contact between the piston skirt and the cylinder bore.  Phosphate dry lubricant coating provides a layer of film in the pin bores and ring grooves for additional sealing until the oiling system of the engine reaches full operating temperature. MAHLE’s Thermal Barrier Coating is a ceramic coating applied to the piston crown that is durable and resistant to thermal shock. This new coating insulates the crown and reduces heat transfer to increase performance. Various high performance file fit ring options are also available specific to each piston’s application.

MAHLE Motorsport’s custom piston program allows customers to work one-on-one with the design engineering team for a truly custom-design experience. The process includes first filling out a Data Sheet which will be used to create the initial CAD drawing. At every step in the design process, there is an approval process until details are finalized for manufacturing. All pistons are manufactured in MAHLE’s race centered Motorsport division and held to the highest standards in the industry with the support of technological advancements MAHLE has developed over the last 100 years.

For more information about MAHLE Motorsport’s custom piston program visit www.mahlemotorsports.com, or call MAHLE Motorsport toll free at 888-255-1942.  To download the 2020 application guide click here. The Greek’s Great Weekend: Watch Chris Karamesines Make His First Career NHRA Final Round In Montreal Circa 1990

The Greek’s Great Weekend: Watch Chris Karamesines Make His First Career NHRA Final Round In Montreal Circa 1990

It was a magical thing to watch. The oldest top fuel finalist in NHRA history at 61 years of age, Chris Karamesines “The Golden Greek” the man, the myth, and the legend, was finally standing on the verge of winning an NHRA National event. The event in question was Le GrandNational Molson, which was the NHRA event held each year at the Sanair Super Speedway for decades. A day of awesome competition had seen the Greek outrun Lori Johns, beat Joe Amato, and finally find himself in the final against Gary Ormsby who had won the 1989 NHRA top fuel championship.

Karamesines was a long way from the halcyon days of 1960 at Alton, Illinois where he and crew chief Don Maynard supposedly made drag racing’s first 200mph run. It was that run that started a career that still maintains today as Karamesines can be found racing top fuel dragsters in 2020, albeit not with the success he had in 1990.

This is the first of two Christ Karamesines Time Machines I made and it’s a really fun watch. The dude it awesome and he is still awesome today. Quick with a smile, soft spoken but never one to be messed with, this 90-ish year old guy is a national treasure and he was one at the age 0f 61 as well.

Enjoy!
