2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR Review: Pantomime In Spades

The 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR is exhilarating. With its supercharged engine, sharp looks, and engaging driving experience, the SVR gets closer to performance SUV nirvana than most contenders in the segment. The SVR does so by committing to performance almost above any other metric, making this Jag not just fun because it’s an SUV. It’s a proper performance vehicle full stop.

To put the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR through its paces, I spent a week living with it, alternating between quick blasts through the canyons and mundane commutes to see if this SUV is more than just a performer. While this Jaguar is not without its flaws, it serves up an exciting driving experience for the type of buyer that needs one car to do it all.

Aging Like Fine Wine

The 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR marks the first model year of this SUV’s mid-cycle refresh and facelift. The first-gen SVR was a stunning thing to look at. Designed by Ian Callum, the man behind heavy-hitters such as the Aston Martin Vanquish, DB9, and DB7, the F-Pace stands out as a family hauler that is genuinely nice to look at.

The refresh, however, takes things further, employing sleeker lines and emphasizing the SVR’s commitment to performance. It all starts at the front, where this latest Jag sports improved aerodynamic elements that allow for greater airflow, resulting in improved cooling and a 35 percent decrease in lift. Additionally, the new face reduces this SUV’s drag coefficient, allowing it to cut through the air more efficiently.

My tester was finished in an SVO premium paint color called Desire Deep Red, which itself is a $4,550 option. While this shade couldn’t decide if it was brown, red, or purple, the way it shifts under different lighting scenarios only helps extend the visual appeal of the SVR. Additionally, my tester’s dark gray contrasting trim highlighted key parts of the F-Pace’s design, including its wheel arches, front aero, and rear diffuser.

The rear of the SVR picks up where the front left off with its new LED taillights. While the large spoiler on the rear hatch screams sporty, it’s all about the rear diffuser. Flanked by two aero elements that help channel air, the diffuser houses four polished exhaust tips that stand out against this SUV’s dark paint but also help highlight the most critical part of the SVR, its engine.

550 Horsepower And A Driving Experience To Match

While most performance SUVs juggle the difficult task of trying to be equal parts comfy and sporty, the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR breaks away by committing to performance. Powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged V8, the SVR pushes out 550 horsepower and 516 pound-feet. All that power allows this 4,535-pound Jaguar to hit 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

Aside from delivering linear power thanks to its supercharger, this V8 sounds fantastic, producing a guttural noise befitting a muscle car. While valves in the exhaust allow you to quiet things down, slam the throttle with the valves open, and you get one of the best-sounding SUVs I’ve ever driven.

The SVR turns noise into speed via an eight-speed automatic transmission mated to an all-wheel-drive system. Around town, this Jag’s powertrain calms down significantly, blending into the background of your commute with smooth shifts and quick responses to throttle inputs. However, the SVR shifts significantly faster at speed, delivering a more aggressive driving experience. While this transmission doesn’t feel as sharp as what you can expect from a dual-clutch, it’s most of the way there.

While this SUV is a true performer with excellent straight-line speed, that isn’t its most impressive trait. The SVR’s party piece is how well it handles. With adaptive dampers on all four corners, this large SUV is incredibly tight, offering little body roll and excellent stability. Aside from just raw performance, the SVR nails the fun department, offering a driving experience that requires few compromises for the buyer who needs a performance vehicle and a family hauler.

However, one such drawback is the F-Pace’s ride quality, which is great when you’re blasting through canyons, but stiff and bouncy around town. While the SVR is far from uncomfortable, a quick spin through a crowded city reveals where this SUV falls on the comfy vs. sporty spectrum.

The SVR’s Biggest Improvement

While this refreshed 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR is nice to look at and even nicer to drive, its most significant improvement lives in its interior. Instead of tweaking a few vital components, this latest F-Pace has an entirely new interior design, including a new steering wheel, dashboard, infotainment screen, and more.

Gone is its predecessor’s 10-inch touchscreen that lived embedded in the dash. Instead, we now have an 11.4-in unit with a tablet-style design that sits proudly on top of the SVR’s HVAC controls. This display is powered by the brand’s latest Pivi Pro infotainment that is both sleek and easy to use while offering up Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The SVR’s white-leather seats are as good-looking as they are to sit in. These bucket-style sport seats offer cooling and heating functionality while supporting you without squishing you in an attempt to be overly sporty. The SVR’s interior strikes a nice balance between ergonomics and material choice, befitting a near six-figure SUV.

How Much Does The 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR Cost?

While the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR starts at $84,600 plus a $1,150 destination charge, our tester came in at $97,379. Optional extras such as the premium paint for $4,550, 22-in wheels for $1,200, and leather seats for $1,150, push this SUVs price closer to six figures. While the SVR is far from cheap, V8-powered competitors from BMW and Mercedes-Benz all start over $100,000, making this Jag a good value in its segment.

I couldn’t find things I would change about it throughout my time with my tester. This is precisely how I would option an SVR, with just enough extras to accentuate its strengths. After a week with my tester, it was clear that while it may not be the world’s fastest SUV or the most luxurious, the SVR strikes a great compromise between offering a fantastic driving experience and enough space for your family to tag along.

First Look: LOKI Basecamp Icarus

Presented by LOKI Basecamp – LOKI Basecamp, maker of premier four-season pods that transform a stock pickup truck into the ultimate adventure vehicle, is proud to release its second model, the Icarus, into the wild.

The new slide-in camper retains the same four-season capabilities and all the basic comforts and functions of the Falcon but condenses it into a smaller, and lighter package that’s more agile and easier to drive while overlanding. The modular interior design is carried over from the Falcon, allowing users to customize the interior to suit their needs, be it sports, leisure, or field office.

“We designed the Icarus with a philosophy of no compromises” said founder and CEO Pierre-Mathieu Roy. “We wanted a four-season unit that was light enough for easy driving both on and off-road, and it needed to be strong enough to carry all of our outdoor toys on the exterior rack system” continued Roy.

The reengineered and reinforced fiberglass shell adds the structural support requested by Roy and it boasts R16 insulation, making it suitable for use in all four seasons. A Webasto Heating Unit supplies hot air and water, and A/C is powered by a 12v air conditioner. A 2,000-watt inverter is up to the task of charging the onboard 300ah to 600ah Lithium battery bank, and rooftop solar panels can supply up to an additional 300w of energy. The Icarus also boasts an on-board water pump, a 15-gallon fresh water tank and 13-gallon grey water tank. The exterior is adorned with an up to 48,000 Lumen light bar on the front, and utility LED lights on the sides and rear as well as a retractable awning. Like the Falcon, the Icarus also has a modular exterior rack system that can be configured to carry a wide range of sporting goods.

The interior has room for a full bed over the cab, hidden storage for a portable toilet, and a multi-function seating and table area that can be reconfigured to make room for an additional bed. The kitchenette features a stainless-steel sink and a mobile induction cooktop. Remaining interior space is dedicated to a mudroom with a mobile shower. That precious real estate can also be used to hang wet clothing or for additional seating.

Historic ‘Warpath’ Powerboat is Heading to Auction

Presented by Ferco Motors – It was back in 1984 for the Offshore Power Boat World Championship that the wind was howling, prompting the catamaran drivers to be wary of the 5 to 10-foot seas. There was one driver, however, that was happy about the conditions. That man was Bob Saccenti of Team Apache Racing who would be the throttles of Warpath, a 41-foot deep-vee offshore racing boat, while Ben Kramer was Driver and Tom Evans was Navigator. While the catamarans are best suited for flat water to skip across, they do not fare well in high seas. For Saacenti and the Warpath, these conditions gave him a one-up over the competition. Warpath would go on to dominate the 1984 World Championship, placing the boat in powerboat history.

Now, Warpath is heading to auction and is doing so in remarkable condition. Between 2007 and 2009, the boat was given a bow to stern restoration that was overseen by Tom Evans, the original crew chief of Team Apache Racing and navigator for the 1984 world championship season and Gail Paik, the original artist.

warpath apache 7

Automotive Photography by Deremer Studios, LLC

Warpath came to Gail and Tom in already solid condition, with no structural repairs necessary. The sturdy Kevlar deep-vee hull was already built for heavy seas, allowing it to remain in fantastic condition. Still, the crew brought Warpath back to its original glory through the restoration of the graphics, mechanical, and cabin features. This includes the rebuild of the twin supercharged 572ci Chevrolet big-block V8 engines, as well as as going through all steering components, throttles, and instrumentation. Altogether, Warpath is currently in truly remarkable condition thanks to the restoration and is ready to be cherished by a new owner.

This is a truly rare opportunity for someone to own a piece of boating history. Coming along with the boat is a triple-axle All American trailer. Warpath will be sold via a week-long online auction beginning on September 10, 2021. For more information, be sure to click the button below.

RM Sotheby’s Presents The Fox Collection: 2008 Bugatti Veyron 16.4

Presented by RM Sotheby’s – Talk of a Bugatti revitalization, which would have returned the storied French marque to the prominence of its pre-World War II glory days, began not long after Ettore Bugatti’s death in 1947. Despite a noble revival effort undertaken in the late 1980s, which led to the fascinating EB 110, Bugatti would not experience a lasting renaissance until the Volkswagen Group purchased the rights to company in 1998—a strategic acquisition initially intended to realize Ferdinand Piëch’s vision of an 18-cylinder automobile of superlative power, performance, and prestige.

Piëch’s mandates for the car that would eventually become the Bugatti Veyron were refined with time, becoming even more ambitious: It needed to produce 1,001 PS (987 horsepower) and achieve a top speed in excess of 400 km/h (nearly 250 mph), yet also be entirely usable for daily driving and comfortable for both driver and passenger. Impressive today, these parameters seemed otherworldly around the turn of the millennium. The cost of the project was of little consequence; what mattered was resurrecting Bugatti in spectacular fashion while demonstrating the engineering prowess of the Volkswagen Group as a whole.

What is truly remarkable is that the production car that emerged in 2005 managed to meet, and even exceed, these lofty expectations, with 0-62 mph acceleration taking just 2.46 seconds en route to a top speed just over 408 km/h (nearly 254 mph). Built around a magnificent, mid-mounted, quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W-16 featuring four valves per cylinder and mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the Veyron stunned the world with its surefootedness at even the most extreme speeds—an ability enabled by a full-time Haldex all-wheel drive system. Even the car’s ancillary systems, including 10 radiators, are marvels of automotive engineering conceived to perform under the most demanding circumstances.

The stopping power was similarly stunning, as the Veyron was anchored by massive carbon-ceramic disc brakes with 15.7-inch discs and eight-piston, four-pad calipers up front, while 15-inch discs with six-piston, two-pad calipers were equipped at the rear. The alloy wheels, which were respectively 20 and 21 inches at the front and rear, were shod with special purpose-designed Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 PAX run-flat tires that provided superior grip.

The array of technology extended to three different drive modes: a Normal mode, at which the ride height was 4.9 inches; a Handling mode that deployed the rear spoiler and lowered ride height to 3.15 inches; and a special key-activated High-Speed mode that dropped ride height to 2.56 inches in front and 2.75 at the rear, while changing the spoiler position.

Equally captivating is the intricacy of the Veyron’s hand-crafted construction and the impact of its design. In its scale and proportions, the Veyron is unlike anything else: It is actually shorter in overall length than a modern Porsche 911, though it rides on a longer, 106.7-inch wheelbase, and it is noticeably lower and wider than that benchmark German sportscar. When experienced in person, a rare opportunity given its low production numbers and corresponding exclusivity, the Veyron has a presence all its own; it is a fitting inheritor of the Bugatti legacy and the world-renowned horseshoe grille.

2008 Bugatti Veyron 16 4 3

VEYRON NUMBER 066

The 66th Bugatti Veyron completed, and the 20th delivered new to the United States, the car offered here has enjoyed a life of limited use and careful maintenance. The exterior is finished in silver metallic over bright silver, an effective two-tone pairing that subtly emphasizes the Veyron’s distinctive lines and complex curves. Like the Bugattis of old, this Veyron’s interior is elegant, simple, and purposeful, while being finely crafted of the highest-quality materials. This example is trimmed in the rare combination of Silk leather with Anthracite inserts; an engine-turned center console serves as a focal point while adding a dash of vintage spirit to the cabin.

With just 750 miles driven at time of cataloguing, this Veyron, now offered from the Fox Collection, has had only two owners from new. Under the care of its first owner in 2018, this car was serviced by Los Gatos Luxury Cars of Los Gatos, California; an invoice on file indicates over $51,000 in work performed, including an annual service as well as new front and rear tires. Given its limited milage and careful maintenance, it is hardly surprising that the car presents in excellent condition today.

Bugatti Veyron production ceased in 2015, at which point a total of 450 cars were produced; only 252 of these were Veyron 16.4 coupes, with only 76 in U.S. specification, meaning examples such as this are destined to remain rare and desirable. Accompanied by its special “speed” key with presentation box, owner’s manual, tools, and battery tender, as well as service invoices, this Bugatti Veyron 16.4 coupe represents a special moment the saga of the revitalized Bugatti marque, as well as the history of the modern supercar. It would make a significant—and not to mention exhilarating—addition to any serious stable.

With minimal production runs and maximized performance, the Fox Collection is filled with supercar selections that truly stand out from their contemporaries, with a combination of uncommon specifications, low mileages, and outstanding color combinations. The Fox Collection will be offered entirely without reserve at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale, taking place 12-14 August 2021.

BendPak Multi-Level Lift Gives You Room to Grow Your Collection

Presented by BendPak – When a classic car you’ve had your eye on for some time becomes available, you don’t want to have to let it pass you by because you don’t have enough space to store it. A multi-level car stacker lets you maximize your garage space.

But will a multi-level system work for you? Many of these systems use chain or cable tethering systems with fixed-level platforms that aren’t ideal for vehicle collections that mix cars, trucks, and SUVs. Plus they often have to be custom engineered to work in your space. Not ideal.

hd 973p 1
BendPak’s HD-973P gives you room to grow your collection.

There is a better way. Global lift manufacturer BendPak offers a cost-effective solution that helps move “I wish” to “I have.” The BendPak HD-973P four-post lift stores three vehicles in a single parking space. Its platforms operate independently, so vehicles of various heights can fit comfortably on one lift. The upper platform accommodates vehicles weighing up to 7,000 lbs., and the lower deck handles up to 9,000 lbs. Anything heavier can go underneath.

We’re talking about a commercial-grade product for your garage. The HD-973P is constructed of heavy-duty steel with a durable powder-coat finish. The platforms feature full-length aluminum decking and non-skid runways. A compact and powerful electro-hydraulic lift system and multi-positioned safety locks spread four inches apart provide almost unlimited parking arrangements between the upper and lower decks.

And you don’t need sky-high ceilings to make it work. BendPak’s proprietary and patent-pending design uses shortened height columns that enable the HD-973P to fit in low spaces where other systems can’t. Plus, the specially designed base frames distribute the load making this unique lifting system suitable for virtually any residential or commercial concrete floor. It can even be installed on asphalt when equipped with concrete footers.

The HD-973P is engineered with redundant spring-loaded safety catches that immediately halt downward movement of either platform in the unlikely event of cable failure. A padded trip bar and limit switch system prevents the platforms above from making contact with the vehicle below. These features provide you with the peace-of-mind that your valuable vehicle collection is protected.

How to Finance Your Car

Credit Score

By Jim Flammang

Paying cash for your next car? Don’t laugh. Quite a few families and individuals do, shunning the entire financing process. In fact, the number of shoppers who finance their vehicle has been declining.

How to Finance Your Car

According to Melinda Zabritski, senior director of Automotive Financial Solutions at credit reporting company Experian, 81.2 percent of new vehicles were being financed as of early 2021 (down from 87 percent). Used cars are far less likely to be purchased with time payments: only about 34.5 percent, versus nearly 43 percent in 2020. Before the COVID pandemic arrived, well over half of used vehicles were financed.

In the early days of motoring, buyers typically paid cash. Only the well-off qualified for credit of any kind. Installment plans gradually began to emerge in the 1920s and ’30s, but didn’t become common until after World War II. During the postwar economic boom, credit purchases helped usher in the consumer society, centering on “easy” payments – which were seldom all that easy, for most families.

What’s New About Auto Loans?

Financing, like the overall car-buying process, is changing: mainly, going digital, as technology keeps boring its way into the automobile business. Computerization might be at the core of today’s installment payment system, but the principles are largely unaltered.

What you have to pay, ultimately, is still a combination of down payment (possibly including a trade-in) and total monthly payments. The size of the latter is determined by interest rate (APR – Annual Percentage Rate), the amount to be financed, and the loan term (duration).

As they have for decades, many shoppers practically ignore the total amount to be paid over a loan term. They’re most concerned about the monthly payment, hoping to keep it as low as possible. As a result, they pay plenty in interest.

Several factors affect the details of an auto loan. Your credit score tops the list, along with your credit history (including its duration), employment, income, and whether you own or rent your residence.

If a credit grantor is dissatisfied with some facts and figures in your loan application, you’re likely to be charged a higher APR, resulting in bigger payments each month. You might have to come up with a larger down payment. Or, if you’re judged un-creditworthy, your application could be rejected completely. Nowadays, the decisions might be made by a computer algorithm rather than a human, but the result is essentially the same.

Should I Buy a Car From CarMax?

Credit Scores Report,Credit,Score,Banking,Borrowing,Application,Risk,Form,Document,Loan

Twin factors, Credit Score (a three-digit figure) and Credit Status, are the primary way to categorize potential loan customers.

Most often called FICO scores, because they’re calculated by the Fair Isaac Corporation, these numeric gateways to the credit world are issued by three separate credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Each organization has its own method of gathering data and using it to assess a person’s creditworthiness, coming up with a score that nearly always differs a bit from the other two.

Credit Status

Credit bureaus place loan applicants into one of five categories, based upon their three-digit credit score: Super Prime, Prime, Nonprime, Subprime, and Deep Subprime. As you can imagine, those with a Super Prime rating are the most likely to get a loan with a low interest rate, while credit-troubled Deep Subprime applicants are sure to get the least favorable terms – if they’re granted credit at all.

FICO scores from Experian, for instance, range from 300 to 850:

  • Super Prime (781-850)
  • Prime (661-780)
  • Nonprime (601-660)
  • Subprime (501-600)
  • Deep Subprime (300-500)

Credit Karma suggests that five basic elements enter into the calculation of a person’s credit score. Payment history accounts for 35 percent of the decision, amount owed 30 percent, and length of credit history 15 percent. Amount of new credit and the credit mix are worth 10 percent each.

Customers who fall into the Prime or Super Prime category account for 65 percent of total financing, according to Experian. Nonprime applicants (with FICO scores below 601) make up just 35 percent.

Whether human or digital, financing decision-makers typically take these five categories as gospel. Unless some tangible credit-related action warrants raising one’s score (or lowering it), the FICO score remains firm. Establish a clean record of on-time payments, and you may be rewarded with a higher score, allowing access to more favorable loan terms.

Amount Financed

After all fees or charges are added to the price of the car you’re buying, the total figure is the amount to be financed. Experian reported early in 2021 that the average amount financed on new cars was $35,392, versus $33,833 in the previous year. For used cars, the average was $22,375 (increased from $20,689).

Down Payment

One of the best ways to keep from spending too much on interest is to present a sizable down payment. Obviously, not everyone can follow this sensible advice.

If you’re trading in your old car, the agreed-upon price for that oldie is applied to the down payment. A higher trade-in value translates to a reduced initial payment.

If your current car isn’t paid for, trading it in can get tricky, and might not help much to sway a loan grantor’s decision. Whenever you owe more on a vehicle than it’s currently worth, you’re in a state of “negative equity.” Or, in more straightforward terms, you’re “upside down.” Postponing the purchase until you’ve paid for the old car, or at least come closer to the end of its term, might be wiser.

Low down payments have been the rule lately. But in the past, 20 percent or more was common for new-car purchases. Edmunds reported in 2019 that the average was 11.7 percent. Kelley Blue Book, among others, recommends at least 10 percent down.

Car Shopping Tips: Test Drive Checklist

How to finance your car APR (Interest Rate)

Vehicle supply is one factor in assessing interest rates. Super-low rates aren’t as likely when supply is low and selling prices (consequently) are high. That’s what happened early in 2021, as the pandemic began to ease. Credit-grantors of any stripe don’t feel obligated to offer a low APR, any more than a low car price, when demand is so high.

Experian’s first-quarter 2021 report found that APRs for new cars averaged 4.1 percent (down from 5.2 percent in 2020). Used car APRs averaged 8.7 percent.

Zero-interest loans may be especially tempting, but beware. The no-interest promotion may apply only to the first segment of the loan term; then, the rate shoots up. No-interest might be valid only for shorter-term loans, with higher monthly payments.

Loan Term (Duration)

Short-term loans (24- or 36-month) used to be fairly common, but for years the trend has leaned heavily toward long-term durations: 60-, 72-, or even 84-month. Some 96-month contracts might even turn up, but the average new-vehicle term is 69.5 months. as reported in Experian’s first-quarter 2021 survey. For used vehicles, the average reached a record high at 65.7 months.

Monthly Payments

Experian reports that the average monthly payment for new-car loans on new vehicles was $577, as of early 2021. For used cars, it’s a more tolerable $412, but even that figure is beyond the means of many shoppers. Unless you come up with a more sizable down payment – or choose a cheaper vehicle – nothing is likely to reduce that every-month figure. Leasing may require a lower monthly outlay, but that’s typically available only to customers with a strong credit rating.

Not So Complicated: It’s All Basic Math

Like filling out income tax forms, loan contracts make many customers uneasy. They’re intimidated by all the numbers floating on the contract page.

Auto contracts are actually nothing more than basic math – with a garble of fine print appended to the bottom. The only figures that really matter are the purchase price of the car, the amount to be financed, and the specific elements: APR, term, down payment, and monthly payment. Nothing more than a simple electronic calculator – or the ability to do basic arithmetic by hand – should be needed. Stay calm, and don’t let yourself be rushed.

In theory, at least, the interest rate (APR) and loan term are negotiable. Don’t expect miracles, though. Neither the dealership’s F&I (Finance and Insurance) person nor the equivalent decider at a bank or credit union is obligated to make any change at all, much less a substantial one. Some remain immovably firm.

Example: Impact of Loan Terms on Monthly Payments

The chart below shows what happens to monthly payments and the total amount paid when the APR, amount financed, or loan duration changes. Let’s consider a car priced at $26,000, with a $6,000 down payment (including trade-in value). Subtraction makes the amount to finance $20,000. As the top line reveals, with a five-year term and tempting 3 percent APR, you’d be paying a total of $21,562 (including $1,562 in interest), at $359 per month. Raising APR to 6 percent raises the monthly payment to $387, and the total to $23,199. A weak credit record might raise APR to 10 percent, boosting the monthly outlay to $425.

How and Where To Get Financed

Bank, credit union, captive, finance company. Those are the four primary possibilities. Or, you can obtain credit directly from the dealership (typically at a higher interest rate).

Banks get a 29-percent share of new-auto financing, according to Melinda Zabritski at Experian, while finance companies account for 14 percent and credit unions make 17 percent of the loans.

Working directly with the dealership doesn’t mean you will be sending payments there. Dealers typically sell their loan contracts to a bank or finance company, which collects the monthly payments.

Traditional financing sources still operate from physical locations, but the internet is packed with online alternatives. Many are quite easy to use, even for those of us who aren’t wholly computer-literate. Most promise better rates, which may or may not be true. Still, some shoppers feel more comfortable dealing in-person with real people.

Though less common lately, car dealers have occasionally offered special low-interest programs to attract customers. Most are sponsored by auto manufacturers. Such special offers might be limited to certain models, or require specific loan details, such as a shorter-than-usual term. They may be available only to shoppers with high credit scores, or only to recent college graduates.

Speed-up Is Today’s Trend In Financing

Online car-buying services emphasize their speedy purchasing process. So do online financing sources, promising decisions in a matter of minutes. As one financing executive put it, any dealer failing to make a loan offer within, say, 15 minutes, will soon be an “also-ran.”

With automated online financing, “no staff interaction is required,” said Susan Perlmutter of Repay Holdings, at the 2021 Auto Intel Summit. “No sitting in front of a finance manager to see what you can and cannot afford.”

Do You Need a Co-signer?

Especially if your credit history is shaky, minimal, or short in duration, a loan grantor might insist that you obtain a co-signer for the auto loan. Be careful, though. If you fail to make payments at some point, that co-signer is liable for the balance of the loan. Make sure the co-signer understands what he or she is getting into before signing on the dotted line.

If you’re turned down for a loan, offering a bigger down payment would reduce the amount to be financed; but that might not be enough to convince an F&I person, or to improve your standing at a digital financing source. There are no quick “tricks” to boost that triple-digit FICO figure. All you can do is shop around, seeking a financing source that’s a bit more lenient. At least, with online financing, obtaining quotes from various sources is a lot easier than in the past.

How to finance your car Who Holds Your Contract?

Some years ago, while attending a conference on subprime financing, I was startled to learn that original issuers of loan contracts seldom kept them. Bundling contracts into groups and selling the whole batch to another organization was already a common practice. But securitization was fast becoming the norm. Going a step further, those groups were being traded in a marketplace similar to the stock market – a practice called securitization. Make sure you know the identity of the current holder, and who to contact with any problems.

Before you finance that new or used car …

  •  Determine how much you can afford – both the monthly payment and the total amount to be paid over the loan term.
  •  Finance a car only when you can afford to add a new payment to your monthly outlay.
  • If affordability is an issue, consider delaying the purchase until you can amass a bigger down payment … or choose a cheaper model.
  •  Remember, what counts is the total amount you’ll be paying over a several-year term, not just the size of each monthly payment.
  •  Sign nothing until you’re sure you understand exactly what you’re agreeing to. You need specific answers, not ambiguous verbiage. Do you feel fully able to make those monthly payments through the number of months specified in the contract?
  •  Get a fully signed copy of the loan contract, whether it’s paper or digital. Make sure it has no blank spaces.
  •  Don’t forget that the total amount you’re paying may include sales tax (if applicable in your city and state) and, possibly, one or more fees.

Whatever type of loan you wind up with, you’re far from alone. Outstanding car loans in the U.S. have increased strongly of late, now approaching $1.3 trillion.

Discover the Cover – May 2021: The New Porsche Panamera

Presented by Porsche Cars North America – A little over a decade ago, we decided we were going to make a sports car unlike any we’ve ever made before. One that had all the personality and performance of a Porsche, but in an entirely new form. A sedan. To do it, we did as we always have. We got to work. We sketched. We tested. We researched. We developed. We redeveloped. And redeveloped some more. It was long hours. It was late nights. And eventually, it was the Panamera. The first sedan to bear the Porsche name.

Conventionalists called it crazy. Skeptics were not in short supply. It was a bold form factor in a sea of familiarity. Different. Loud. Brazen. It was a Porsche.

Since that first generation took the automotive world by storm, our desire to create a better one has stayed in drive. We have never put our pencils down. Our thumbs have continuously punched stopwatches.

And our expectations of craftsmanship and design have only heightened. We have kept sketching, testing, researching, and developing. Making it better. Making it faster. Making it real.

Introducing the new Panamera.

may21 porsche 3

The fastest, most well-appointed, most customizable Panamera ever. One with sharper design, heightened performance, and more ways to make it your own than ever before.

As with every sports car we’ve ever made, it is more than a machine. It is a benchmark. Yet another one from a company famous for them. And proof of what can happen, when you never stop driving.

The new Panamera.
