Flash Drive: Lucid Air Dream Edition R

A Quick Drive and More Tech Announcements

The ride was short, but provided the essentials—time split between the driver’s seat and the spacious back seat, the two defining spaces in the Lucid Air, the latest luxury electric car to arrive on the market.

This was a pre-production Dream Edition Range model, the actual car used by Lucid execs and Motor Trend magazine staff to demonstrate the car’s range by driving from LA to SF on a single charge. Customer cars are now flowing off the production lines at Lucid’s Arizona factory, so real world test drives are coming soon. Consider this a quick preview.

Lucid Air Dream Edition
Compact outside; spacious inside

Quick is the operative word. Lucid’s two motors and 966 horsepower (in the Range model; the Performance version boasts more than 1,000 horsepower) move the Air smoothly and swiftly to the maximum speed allowed on any road. Road feel is solid and my relatively low-speed run barely teased the potential out of the car.

Lucid Air Dream Edition

Real luxury feel and giant glass

That’s from the front seat. The ride in back is another world. It’s designed for comfort, part of the car’s goal of making a market in China, where chauffeured high end cars (the initial Lucid models will retail for more than $160,000) are relatively common. Lucid makes a point of the Air having a full-size car’s interior packaged in a midsize car’s exterior. That design sleight of hand, made possible by an electric car’s flat floor reduced need for engine space, is evidently in the spacious leg and headroom.

An additional comment I would add is that the Lucid presents itself as a traditional luxury with full instrumentation in front of the driver and auxiliary controls and information on a hidden tablet that can be summoned with a quick touch. The trim pieces have all the right look and feel to impart to the buyer that he/she has purchased a six-figure car.

One feature struck me as particularly distinctive. While panoramic glass rooms are becoming quite common in the automotive community, the Lucid takes a slightly different approach to the idea. The sweep of the glass from the touchdown point on the hood id uninterrupted (other than by two seemingly floating sun visors) until it reaches a crossbar above and slightly behind the driver. It made for an expansive view of the exterior and enhanced the spacious feeling of the car’s interior.

More Tech

The battleground for the next round of EVs (the Lucid is only one of a dozen either just introduced or coming soon) has numerous fronts. Lucid has addressed two of those with its 1,000+ horsepower performance model and its companion 528-mile range model. The third area, another one in which Tesla has set the bar, is advanced driver assistance technology (ADAS).

The week after my brief test drive Lucid Group announced details on its DreamDrive driver assistance platform, a suite of technologies that will be standard on the high-end models like the Dream Edition I drove and optional on other models. Like Tesla’s misnamed Autopilot, it’s designed to allow hands-free driving under certain conditions. Unlike Tesla, which appears to be moving to a completely camera-based system, Lucid’s systems uses 32 on-board sensors, including the first use of lidar on a production vehicle.

Lucid Air DreamDrive

Surrounded by sensors

The extensive variety of sensors will allow Lucid to offer more than 30 driver-assistance features, including collision avoidance, Traffic Jam assist and Highway Assist.

The sensors feeding the system include 14 visible-light cameras, five radar units, four surround view cameras, ultrasonic sensors around the vehicle’s exterior and a solid-state lidar sensor. Lucid describes the ultimate system, which will be able to grow in capability via over-the-air software updates, as an “invisible co-pilot.”

The DreamDrive system relies on the car’s proprietary on-board Ethernet Ring to enable quick response and will use the Lucid Air’s 21-speaker audio system to deliver directional alerts while presenting information on the graphic display.

2021 Corvette Convertible Revealed as Indy Pace Car

Chevrolet’s 2-seater looks ready to race!

For the 18th time in Corvette history, the Corvette will pace this year’s Indianapolis 500. It seems appropriate, as the Chevrolet brothers were pioneers at this very track. May 30th will mark 100 years since Arthur had a great run in the fist Indy 500, and they were competitive for the next two decades.

I have owned a few Corvette pace cars over the years, so I am partial to the 2007 which was dressed in Atomic Orange. To keep the field safe this year, we see Sky Cool Gray and Strike Yellow accented by the traditional logos of the event. The strobe lights are normally auxiliary, but Corvette engineers were able to integrate the strobes into the convertible’s deck lid. The press release from IMS doesn’t mention how many examples have been prepared, but rest assured, I am on the hunt for one. Click the button to see why the 2021 Corvette is right for you, and stay with us for all your Chevy news.

Aston Martin Teases Something New For March 22

Almost five years ago we were thrilled to see the Vantage evolve into a track missile, so could it happen again? Social Media is buzzing because Aston Martin has teased something new for March 22nd. The AMR lineup consists of their performance-minded cars at an easier price-point. Some of the sensibilities are withheld to keep weight down and a manual transmission is standard equipment. If I had to guess, we are looking at the silhouette of the 2022 Vantage AMR Pro.

This year’s Vantage offers 503 horsepower through a seven-speed dog-leg. You also have 505 lb-ft of torque at almost any rpm thanks the 4-liter V8. The twin-turbo engine is built by AMG and this is the only way you can have it with three pedals. Could this new car have more power from the Black Series? Anything is possible, so check out these great offers from our dealers and stay with us for all your Aston Martin news.

Sir Lewis Hamilton’s 2021 Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance Unveiled

Brackley Technical Centre is the new home of the AMG Petronas F1 team, and they are ready for the championship. Public testing is only days away in Bahrain, so sir Lewis Hamilton’s 2021 Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance has been unveiled. Next year will see an all-new aero package from the FIA, but that is no reason for them to rest on their laurels.

Burning the midnight oil, engineers met this year’s downforce changes without approaching the team’s cost cap. The Mercedes-Benz star has been replaced by the AMG logo, accented by burgundy from their Principal Partner INEOS. Most major parts are carried over from the W11 car, with new adaptations to meet this year’s rulebook. Changes were mandated to the floorpans, brake inlets, and diffuser to slow down all teams.

Therefore, the W12 incorporates advancements to the engine, cooling system, and other critical areas. Of course, they are playing these cards close to the chest, so it will make for an entertaining season to say the least. We hope Sir Lewis can find some time to finish development on the AMG ONE, so stay with us for all your Mercedes-AMG news.

The Rock’s Georgia Ranch Lists for $7.5 Million

Earlier this week, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson listed his sprawling equestrian ranch home in the outskirts of Atlanta, GA for $7.5 million. The list price comes in at a $1.5 million loss from what Johnson reportedly paid for the home just over a year ago. It is unclear if he ever actually lived at the residence, and the listing photos show a stunning home stripped of any personal belongings.

The listing was purchased through a Georgia-based holding linked to The Rock’s business managers in Los Angeles in October 2019. The deal was done for $9 million, according to reports. Since then, the 46-acre French Provincial has been under Johnson’s ownership. The custom home at the heart of the acreage boasts exquisite detail including wide plank old growth walnut flooring and great stone fireplaces, according to the listing held by Glennis Beacham of Beacham & Company, REALTORS®.

The rustic ranch home also has a library, wine cellar and extravagant backyard pool and spa with a cabana, along with equestrian facilities. There’s a 12-stall horse barn, arena with a viewing deck and caretaker’s cottage to top it all off.

McLaren 720S Le Mans Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Their Historic Win

Winning the world’s most famous race as a new automaker was unthinkable. It is comparable to a rookie pitcher throwing a no-hitter at his first Major League game. June of 1995 was the last time a street-legal car won a podium finish, and the McLaren F1 GTR # 59 still inspires their employees to strive for excellence. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the win, the 720S Le Mans will be limited to 50 coupes.

McLaren 720S Specs, Price, Photos & Review

Only 16 cars are reserved for Europe, so our dealers will be able to secure your allocation. Choose between McLaren Orange or Sarthe Grey. The rockers and bumpers are finished in Ueno Grey, and MSO provides the louvered carbon fiber fenders. A 25th Anniversary logo features prominently on the quarter panels, as does the gloss black roof scoop. The 5-spoke LM wheels evoke the design from 1995, with gold brake calipers providing a brilliant contrast. The VIN of each car wil start with 298- the number of laps completed by the winning car. Owners will also have full access to MSO Defined and MSO Bespoke customizations.

Examples include two distinct satin finish carbon fiber interiors, and a 6-point racing harness. What is not optional is the twin-turbo 4-liter V8. It sends 720 horsepower to the rear wheels in order to reach 62 mph in 2.9 seconds. You will be at 124 mph in 7.8 seconds while on your way to 212 mph. Nothing we have encountered compares the civility and brutal performance offered by McLaren’s flagship, so click the button below to find one for yourself.

Lamborghini Urus Price

The new Lamborghini Urus for sale is approximately $200,000 brand new although approximately 70% of buyers spend an average of an extra $40,000 to customize their Super SUVs. As only the second SUV released by the iconic brand, Lamborghini has exceeded expectations for their latest crossover. Lamborghini Urus Standout Features

Despite the fact that the Lamborghini Urus is not a traditional super sports car, it is a much more practical purchase for many drivers. With top speeds of 190 MPH, it is the fastest SUV in the world and because of its sports car influence in design, it looks every bit a Lamborghini. Likewise, it is able to comfortably accommodate 5 passengers, unlike most Lamborghini sports cars. This alone has certainly sparked the interest of those who would not ordinarily be interested in a vehicle produced by Lamborghini. Paired with its potent performance, off-road capabilities and a lavish interior that focuses on comfort, the Lamborghini Urus is the ultimate Sports Utility Vehicle.
