FREE LIVE DRAG RACING: The 2nd Annual Independence Showdown From Maple Grove Is LIVE!

Nothing is more American on the 4th of July weekend than drag racing! At least for the folks who have headed out to Maple Grove this weekend for some great bracket racing. It’s the 2nd Annual Pep Boys Speed Shop and Off Road Independence Showdown, and the car count is great. Racers from all over have shown up to race for real money this weekend, because what is better than winning big on Independence Day?

Here is the video description from our friends at MotorManiaTV:

For the first time on MMTV, we welcome the 2nd event from the FRBR Promotions team. Known for their Door Wars race in the fall, last year they decided to expand to 2 races with the Inaugural Independence Showdown. With $15,000 going to Top Eliminator, $7,500 to No-Box and $1,500 to the Jr Dragster class each day, there will be plenty of happy people by the end of the weekend!

When Last Minute Testing Your Burnout Truck For Cleetus And Cars, Sometimes Your Driveway Becomes The Burnout Pad

When Last Minute Testing Your Burnout Truck For Cleetus And Cars, Sometimes Your Driveway Becomes The Burnout Pad

Yep, James is no poser, that’s for sure. When under a time crunch to get their LS Swapped S10 Burnout truck, aka Burnie, ready for Cleetus and Cars Burnout Rivals in Indy, sometimes you have to piss off the neighbors. After stealing the trans out of his race car, and going through brake issues and a couple other snags, Burnie was back up and running with just hours to go before leaving for Indy. Of course there were a couple other snags and just an hour before it had to be on the trailer there was testing that needed going. After all, you got to know if there are vibrations, if the new torque converter is okay, and whether the brakes will hold for big time tire frying excitement or not.

Testing was in order and with no time to go anywhere else, the driveway became the burnout pad whether the neighbors liked it or not. Now I happen to know James’ neighborhood. I went there to pick up some tires he hooked me up with for the drive days on Rocky Mountain Race Week in 2019. It’s your average Colorado high desert neighborhood with family homes all around. This is not the country, and it is not remote. It is very close to town.

But the testing had to happen and the results were no vibrations, a tune that needs some tweaks, and brakes that need more bleeding to hold. But most importantly the smoke happened. And lots of it. Watch.

Awesomely Weird: This 1970s Chevrolet Parts Film Stars Evel Knievel And Literally Makes No Sense

Awesomely Weird: This 1970s Chevrolet Parts Film Stars Evel Knievel And Literally Makes No Sense

We’re guessing someone lost their job for this one. You are going to watch this 1970s Chevrolet parts film which stars Evel Knivel and makes literally no sense at all. The theme of the film is “conflict” and it is illustrated by a series of scenes where animals eat other animals, black and white movies are shown, and Evel Knievel jumps stuff on his motorcycle, sometimes crashing, sometimes not. Throw in a dose of 1970s Anchoman-level hilarity with a bikini-clad woman, and you have yourself one of the most singular odd things we have ever seen.

Make no mistake, Knievel would never turn down a gig, especially one with Chevrolet that likely was a great payday for reading some cue-cards. The company definitely did not hire him for his suave acting ability because this dude is straight up stiff while narrating the action. By action, we mean the bizarre things we are shown on screen.

Oddly, while Chevrolet parts are mentioned a handful of times there’s barely (if ever) a Chevrolet car shown as a prop in the film. This whole thing is some weirdo theater of the mind that was likely schemed up by an executive’s kid. “Hey Johnson, get my son a job in the media department and let him run wild!”

Obviously, Knievel was majorly famous at this point and his star only grew bigger. Note that he mentions that someday, “I’ll jump a mile….” we all know how that quest ended.

You have to see this one to believe it.

Press play to see the weirdest Chevrolet Parts video ever made, starring Evel Knievel!

Check Out Tim Allen’s Entire Car Collection Right Here. Wow This Dude Has Some Cool Stuff.

Check Out Tim Allen’s Entire Car Collection Right Here. Wow This Dude Has Some Cool Stuff.

I’ve been fortunate enough to see some amazing car collections in person, including some that we aren’t even allowed to talk about, but whenever you get the chance to see a collection like Tim Allen’s you know it is something special. He and Jay Leno have been friends for a long time, and their shops aren’t that far away from each other in Southern California. Both are fairly regular attendees at the Bob’s Big Boy cruise night in Taluca Lake, and Tim is known to show up with the family for burgers while checking out the hot rods. In this tour by the Petersen Automotive Museum folks, you’ll get a tour from Tim himself at his collection.

Here is Part One and Part Two of the walk through of his collection with information on each and every car in the building. What’s funny are the cars that Tim can’t stand buy keeps because his wife adores them. LOL I also like the fact that some of these he’s had for so long that he can’t even remember some of the details and you don’t really car because it is Tim talking about them. Check out the video, enjoy the cars, and dream about having some of them yourself.

Making Formed Carbon Fiber Parts At Home! This Is Super Cool And We Want To Do It!

Making Formed Carbon Fiber Parts At Home! This Is Super Cool And We Want To Do It!

We’ve featured Carbon Fiber fabrication videos from Street Bandito before, but this one is cooler yet. The process for building this small part can totally be replicated for something bigger, and other than the materials there are no special tools you can’t acquire pretty easily. This part is small, more decorative that structural, but ends up really nice and strong and is the first part he ever built himself. I dig it, and this video just makes me want to try it in my own garage. I’ve already been thinking I need an oven for the new shop in case I want to powder coat small parts or something, but this just cements the idea that I need it. An oven, a vacuum pump, and some materials and you are good to go. This is fun looking stuff and with the availability of resins and materials nowadays you can make virtually anything from Carbon Fiber.

What do you think? Would you try this at home?

Pagani Huayra Roadster BC Configurator Offers Endless Possibilities

Horacio Pagani and his team of artists rarely deny a customer’s demands. As long as the finished product is in the best interests of art and performance, your wishes will become a reality. In order to offer a starting point for their latest hypercar, the Pagani Huayra Roadster BC configurator offers endless possibilities.

Jay Leno Drives Keith Urban’s Pagani Huayra

On Saturday we were honored to display the first Huayra Roadster at Cars & Coffee Tampa. All 100 examples sold out immediately, with the final cars being delivered a few weeks ago. As is normally the case, Mr. Pagani compiled a series of improvements that could make it better, but they would be best executed with a new foundation.

As a race-ready roadster, this new model starts with a stronger chassis. Instead of titanium infused carbon fiber, the entire car is carbon-triax. The patented material is 50% lighter and 20% stronger than its predecessor. Working with AMG, horsepower is up to 755 with 811 lb-ft of torque. Xtrac developed a new 7-speed sequential to handle the power.

No detail was overlooked, as exhaust flaps open to fill the aerodynamic voids ahead of the diffuser. All this was done to pay respect to Pagani’s first customer. Benny Caiola believed Horacio could conquer the world, so his full deposit was given in cash to help the artist build his first car. Only 40 examples of the Roadster BC will be offered, so strike while the iron is hot.

Classic YouTube: Watch As This VW Golf Monsters Hillclimbs At Full Chat!

Classic YouTube: Watch As This VW Golf Monsters Hillclimbs At Full Chat!

If there is one truth to racing, it’s that you never half-ass anything you do. If you can’t be bothered to give it your all, don’t bother showing up. That goes for any form of racing out there. But what does 100% look like? Full-on maximum attack, where you wonder if insanity has overridden the survival instinct, that’s what. It’s the difference between pedaling out of a bad situation on the strip versus hanging the hell on and crossing the stripe a tenth faster. It’s moderating a trail versus flying over every fourth little incline to keep up momentum in a rally. And in a hillclimb…well, here’s your lesson’s subject of the day. The driver is Daniel Wittwer, and his early VW Golf is the car. The Golf is only pushing out about 25o horsepower from a 16V 2.0L four, but you’d swear that there’s more the way that Wittwer is pushing this little VW. We are pretty sure that he used the Armco barrier as a ricochet device, bouncing the car back onto the asphalt. We’re almost proof-positive that at one point he was two tires off on the shoulder besides one glaringly obvious moment. We are pretty sure that the rear tires are worn a quarter less than the fronts, given how much hang time they got in corners. And the cover photo speaks for itself, doesn’t it? Maybe not as much as Wittwer’s celebration after the run…we’d be happy to be alive, too, after a hell ride like that!

Classic YouTube: The 1973 Dodge Dart Sport “Convertriple”…All The Excitement Over A Fold-Down Seat?

Classic YouTube: The 1973 Dodge Dart Sport “Convertriple”…All The Excitement Over A Fold-Down Seat?

It’s 1973. The party is over, the music has died (except for the shop behind Pontiac’s main office, where you can still hear some early heavy metal blasting.) You’ve got a front row seat for the first oil shock, the 1973 OPEC crisis, and the only thing you stand to move with any kind of hope are your smaller, compact cars. You can’t rely on sporty and powerful anymore, especially when you are now going to have to be better at explaining the virtues of a platform past the common “it’s a good value” line. Good value? How? What makes Car A a better value over Car B? What do you get for your dollar’s worth, and is it worth the effort or time to buy new instead of just holding on to that trusty (if rusty) thing that has been shuttling you back and forth for years now?

The Dodge Dart Sport, the car that had been the lithe Demon before religious groups got their knickers in a twist, was one of Chrysler’s best hits of the 1970s. Plymouth had re-skinned their Valiant into a handsome coupe shape and Dodge had gotten their copy of the bodyshell to use, and they sold. The Duster 340 and Demon 340 were junior supercars that could give you a thrill, but with the 340 gone and the 360 that replaced it was only competent, not as wild as before. So, back to that trick that will bring buyers into the showrooms. How about a fold-down rear seat?

Yeah, that’s no joke. The “Convertriple” option for 1973 and 1974 was supposed to fuse three cars into one: an economy compact that had the open roof feel of the convertible (really, a manually-operated sunroof) and a fold-down rear seat that morphed the car into the station wagon. You can go ahead and roll your eyes, we understand. Just as you can understand why hearing a group of young ladies losing their minds over a fold-down rear seat is smirk-inducing.
